brainrot

This is what happens to your brain when you subject it to an endless diet of internet and social media rubbish.  The stuff that you watch is then also referred to as brainrot (sometimes spelled as two words brain rot).  It is associated with Gen Alpha who are stereotyped as the generation in particular that has digital habits that cause brainrot.  Their slang is regarded as a symptom of their mental decay, with words like skibidi and sigma and rizz  being held up as examples.  This slang came to prominence in a speech given by Senator Fatima Payman which she addressed to Generations Z and Alpha. In 2023 brainrot became an internet meme which gave prominence to a word which had been around since 2007 (where it was used in relation to dating game shows).
