neurohacking

Just as biohacking is the employment of various techniques to improve the functioning of the body, so neuorhacking is the employment of various techniques to improve the functioning of the mind.  A hack in this context is a clever if not necessarily orthodox solution to a problem, a general meaning which derives from computer use.  Neurohacking relies on the plasticity of the brain and on its ability to rewire itself,  as with recovery from the effects of trauma or disease.  But it has moved on from ideas of how to treat deficiencies to the idea that healthy people can use the techiques of neurohacking to improve brain function, as, for example, in achieving better decision-making, better impulse control, and better ability to focus.

The main techniques are brain stimulation (the application of electric or magnetic pulses to specific regions of the brain), neurofeedback (the transmission of feedback on brain activity as images or sound which assists the individual to try to change their brain activity to be more like that of others), the reduction of cognitive load (the minimisation of disturbances to concentration and focus brought about by the various devices that surround us now),  sleep monitoring (the benefits of a good sleep are well known), microdosing  (the administering of tiny doses of psychedelic drugs) and nootropics (the administering of drugs to improve cognitive function, drugs such as caffeine and vitamin B12).
