street play
It is not uncommon for residents, particularly those in small streets where they can close the street to traffic to have street parties on special occasions. But the idea of using the street to bring communities together seems to be taking off in different ways. We now have the notion of street play, the kind of thing that used to happen in an unorganised way where children would take to the street to play various games. In a world where cars dominate our lives, this is something that needs to be organised, so some councils have declared a few suitable streets to be play streets on Sunday afternoon. The streets are closed although cars belonging to residents in the street can be ushered through. There is an organisation which has been fostering the Play Streets movement, but the idea seems to be taking off so that councils are acting independently.
