Aussie swazi
This is a name for the Southern Cross as used in the Eureka flag, which in the last decade has been associated with right-wing jingoism and racism. Swazi or Swassie is short for swastika and rhymes with Aussie. In particular this was the name given by tattooists to the version of the Southern Cross which was increasingly in demand among their customers.
In 2017 Indigenous filmmaker Warwick Thornton released a documentary on the history and significance of the Eureka Flag called We don’t need a map, explaining how it had been hijacked by right-wing groups. Some years earlier he had expressed concern at the prospect of this happening and was taken aback by the negative public reaction. But in recent years more people are becoming aware that, in the wake of some high-profile race riots, such as the one at Coogee, and anti-Islamic protests, the issue is becoming more pressing.
