quazza

We are all familiar with  rona as the shortened form of coronavirus, and with isolation being shortened to iso.  But there are more such shortened forms giving us a sense of familiarity with COVID-19 and all its ways.  There is sanny or hanny san for hand sanitisersegro for segregation, and quarry or quazza for quarantine.  Roly Sussex has commented on this last one that:

Quazza follows a pattern in Australian English where R becomes Z: Terry gives “Tezza”, Barry gives “Bazza”, and quarantine yields “quazza”.

The other way to go, of course, is to abbreviate the word and add an –ie  or –y  ending, so quarantine becomes quarrie or quarry. Probably the –ie  ending is preferable because it avoids any confusion in print with the quarry that is the source of stone. An -o ending is also possible as in quarro.
