cough-shame

We are now suddenly acutely aware of the dangers involved in the simple cough or sneeze, particularly when the person coughing is not wearing a mask.  Before people might have suffered in silence but now that it is not just a question of manners but of public health, there are those who will attempt to shame the cougher into wearing a mask. Undoubtedly a cough will make everyone look at the person coughing. Some put a good deal of meaning into their look and some will even make a small noise to indicate their displeasure.  Cough-shaming is a response that draws approval from some and criticism from others, particularly those who argue that for medical reasons they can’t wear a mask and yet they draw hostility from others.
