video exam

Technology has come to the aid of music students and examiners who can no longer meet to conduct an exam. The students can prepare for a video exam, more correctly known by the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) as a video repertoire exam because it is simply the performance of required pieces without the performance of scales and technical passages, or an aural test or a general knowledge test.  The exam that includes all these aspects of musicianship is now referred to as the comprehensive exam.

The video has to be of sufficiently good quality for the examiner to be able to make an assessment of the student’s ability. This can be a challenge for some students and parents. However good the video is, the sound quality will lack nuance. It may be possible to tell if the student is playing the right notes, but the musical quality of their playing may be harder to judge.

There is also a video exam for speech and drama students.
