celtuce
Another vegetable we have acquired from China, which produces leaves rather like lettuce leaves, and a stem which can be sliced and used like a celery stem. Thus the blended name, pronounced [sell-tuhs]. It is also called Chinese lettuce. It also goes by the name of celery lettuce or asparagus lettuce which just shows how new it is. We haven’t settled on the name yet. The plant is much bigger than a lettuce and doesn’t produce a heart, but the young leaves can be picked until the plant goes to seed. The sliced stem can be eaten raw or cooked in a stir fry.
