quiet Australians
These are the people nominated by Scott Morrison as his support base, the people who agree with his policies but don’t make a huge fuss the way the noisy elite do about what THEY think is right for the country. The quiet Australians just get on with life and do what they have to do, while giving encouragement to Morrison in the ballot box but never hijacking the media the way those shouty schoolchildren do when they protest about climate change.
This is a new take on the silent majority, the ordinary people, the people who Menzies described as the ‘forgotten people’. Politicians on both sides have claimed to have understood what ordinary people want and to defend it against elitist latte-drinking groups who manipulate the media. Essentially the quiet Australians are the people who defend the status quo and distrust globalisation and big-city pontificating about what should be done on the major issues of the day.
Scott Morrison was able to congratulate Boris Johnson on winning over the quiet Britons, known in the UK as the squeezed middle, alarm clock Britain, and more recently, Workington Man.
