smart insulin

This is not something available to Type 1 diabetes sufferers yet, but it is apparently on the way.  At the moment diabetics of this type have to monitor their blood sugar levels (usually with a pin prick) and inject insulin as required.  They can never escape the monitoring and injecting regime.  They are also bound to experience some sugar highs and lows — hyperglaecemia and hypoglycaemia — which are not good for their health.

The official name for smart insulin is glucose-responsive insulin (GRI) but I think that, speaking lexicographically, smart insulin is the name that will be popular in common speak.  This form of insulin can be ingested or injected.  What it does is to respond to blood sugar levels, springing into action or ceasing activity in response to the need.  The diabetic might only need to take insulin once a week. For diabetics of Type 1 this could be extremely liberating.
