YIMBY
Yimbyism is a movement which is in its infancy in Australia but which has been active in America for the past decade. The acronym stands for Yes In My Backyard and so a YIMBY is the opposite of a NIMBY (Not In My Backyard). It was the high cost of housing in San Francisco in 2010 that kicked off the YIMBY movement there, and so it is the high cost of housing in Australia that has led to the YIMBY movement in Australia to put pressure on governments to create more urban developments that will ease the strain. Any attempt to increase housing density in our cities usually meets with opposition from the locals so the Yimbies want to argue the cause and promote the need for the development of affordable housing.
There is one other acronym in this space — the PHIMBY. That stands for Public Housing In My Backyard.
