blockchain wedding

This is a wedding in the metaverse.  The couple sit down, each with their laptop, as their avatars enter the wedding venue and talk to the marriage celebrant.  They exchange NFT rings and receive an NFT certificate.  (An NFT is a non-fungible token, defined by Macquarie as ‘a unique digital certificate which uses blockchain technology to certify ownership, authenticity and scarcity of a digital asset’.)

The certificate is not legally binding. It is possible that the couple can dispose of their money and physical possessions through a smart contract but again this is not entirely suited to be a wedding contract and does not appear to have legal force.

So who wants a blockchain wedding?  People who, according to the laws of their country, are not allowed to marry, for whom this provides some ceremony to mark their union.  People who want to invite others to a form of their wedding which they can attend even if they are a long way away from the IRL couple (in real life couple).  People who want some novel way of staging their wedding. Since a blockchain wedding is not legal it cannot be more than a gimmick but for some it is a bit of fun. The party can be out of this world!
