urge surfing

This is a therapy for addictions and ungovernable behaviours in which the sufferer is taught to use a state of mindfulness to ride out an urge in the way a surfer rides out a wave.  Just like the wave, an urge will start gradually, build to a peak and then fade away.  If you can go with it without giving into it, just knowing that it is there and what it is doing and how you can manage it, then you can get through it. And once you have learnt this technique the urges gradually lose their strength. Something to look forward to.  It is useful in the management of addiction whether that is to drugs, alcohol or gambling, and in the management of violent outbursts of temper and other such unwanted behaviours.
