sober curious

The curiosity in this case is about alcohol and the effect it is having on your life.

This is not something that is necessarily related to a full-blown alcoholism.  Anyone can look thoughtfully at their reasons for drinking, even in moderation, and consider whether alcohol actually gives them what they are seeking.  Are they more socially relaxed or do they in fact get even more nervous as they struggle with slight befuddlement on top of other anxieties? The sober curious may well abstain for a period just to experiment with other ways of dealing with the challenges of life.

After a period of such self-evaluation the sober curious person may then engage in mindful drinking in which they monitor their consumption of alcohol, assessing with each drink whether it is worth it to them to have it.

The term sober curious was coined by Ruby Warrington, the author of Sober Curious: The Blissful Sleep, Greater Focus, Limitless Presence, and Deep Connection Awaiting Us All on the Other Side of Alcohol, published in 2018.
