vanlife

Vanlife is a movement that embraces minimalism and personal freedom and self-development. The corollary is that it opposes consumerism, the economic and political status quo, and the imposition of restrictions on the individual by the government.   This is quite a lot to carry around in a van but it distinguishes vanlifers from off-roaders who simply want to pitch camp outside official camping grounds for a better camping experience.

The other benefit of vanlife is that it is relatively inexpensive although within that small financial range there is still the need to hustle to make ends meet and put food on the table. Exponents stress that there is uncertainty and discomfort so if you are not willing to be flexible and patient, then vanlife is not for you.

With the movement’s popularity growing, the residents of favoured places such as Byron Bay are becoming resentful of the people they see as freeloaders cluttering their streets and causing social disturbances. What they do with their waste and how they encroach on householders is a particular grievance.
