race lift

A character in a movie or TV show will have what is called a race lift  (sometimes racelift) when their race or ethnicity is changed in a version derived from the original.  When a black person becomes a white person in a subsequent version, this is called whitewashing.  But sometimes a white person can be racelifted to become black, yellow or brown. This can be in response to a perceived need to have more racial diversity in the show, or to have more minority groups represented in the show.

There is a variant called gender flip which changes roles from man to woman, or woman to man, to achieve more gender equality.  The whole process is called race bending.
