COVID-19 long-hauler
This is a person who has experienced COVID-19 and recovered after the usual two weeks, but then has unaccountably suffered a return of the symptoms of the disease, sometimes along with other new symptoms. The illness waxes and wanes over some months with recurrent fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, skin and gastrointestinal conditions, and so on. No one is quite sure what is happening. Tests can be positive or negative.
There are a number of theories about what is causing this. The first is that, after the initial bout, the virus remains latent in the system and is reactivated from time to time. The medical community, however, is not convinced that this coronavirus can reactivate. Another theory is that it is a re-infection. We are not sure if having the disease gives immunity or not. Another is that it is a cycle of diminishing responses to the virus which will eventually peter out. And finally the notion is that this is a separate syndrome brought on by the bout of COVID-19. The good news is that the long-haulers or long-termers will eventually recover.
