social distancing squad

This is not as catchy a title as, for example, mod squad. It is the official name of the group of 80 people given the job of monitoring social distancing on public transport. They are assisted in carrying out their duties by 11,000 cameras situated along the transport routes.  They also have data from Opal ticketing to tell them where peak traffic spots are.  And they have social distancing marshals on the buses and trains.

Of course the unofficial name has arrived as well. Be on the lookout for COVID cops who will politely ask commuters to adhere to social distancing.  The police can also be referred to as COVID cops when they investigate breaches of the COVID regulations. And the NRL has its own COVID cops who will try to keep the players in line as the competition begins again. We wish them good luck with that!
