she-cession

 A she-cession is a recession in which women are more greatly affected than men.  The COVID-19 recession is an instance of a she-cession whereas the Great Depression was a he-cession.  Men were more greatly affected in that depression because they were the ones that had jobs.  There are those who argue that all recessions are mancessions, particularly because building and construction goes immediately.

 Women do more casual work than men so their jobs have been among the first to go and there is no lifeline extended to them in terms of government support.  In addition to this they are affected by the closure of schools and childcare to a greater level than men.  They are often in the front line of the provision of care for the sick and the elderly.

 It is also true that minorities are disproportionately affected but no one seems to have come up with a name for that.

 She-cession has given rise to the related term, she-covery, with some arguing that this mancession will give rise to a better recovery for women. Who knows.  All I know is that we have a whole new set of popular economics terms to deal with it.
