bin outing
Just as the children were encouraged to get creative by drawing rainbows on the footpath to signify the presence of a child in the house, so their parents are encouraged to turn a mundane chore into an opportunity to make a splash. The bin outing is dress-ups combined with putting out the garbage bins. This started with a Facebook group in Hervey Bay, but the idea has caught on throughout Australia and travelled around the world. The participants naturally put photos of themselves online for others to admire. The first Hervey Bay bin outer appeared as Elsa in Frozen, but pandas have been spotted, as has Wonder Woman.
Another amusement for others to share at a distance is footpath trivia. Someone chalks up trivia questions (and cunningly provides answers) on the footpaths that people are pounding in their pursuit of exercise. I have seen someone draw a hopscotch on the path, and I have seen a person arriving a bit later who used it. It doesn’t really matter if these things disappear in a shower of rain because they can be done afresh.
A way of saying hello to the neighbours and getting a sense of what is going on in the outside world is to have dinner in the driveway. You can set up a table or just prepare a picnic. It is connection of a sort while maintaining a suitable distance.
