nose-pinching

Or it might be a nose-holding exercise or choice or decision.  This one is not common but it caught my eye in a political article recently.  Indeed it does seem to occur in either form in the context of politics where you are confronted by two options, neither of which comes up smelling like roses.   A common enough event in politics.  It also turned up as a description of the choice that faced Americans in the recent election.  It is one to watch for the future. Its frequency will be determined by how often we are required to hold our noses as we cast our votes.
