This is the verb, to smug, meaning ‘to behave in a complacent and disrespectful fashion towards someone’. There are a number of different meanings for the verb. There is an obsolete one meaning ‘to spruce up’ as in He smugged his beard. Then there is relatively recent American shortening of smuggleas in to smug something in under your coat.
