appointment viewing

Now that we have so much more freedom not only in what we watch on whatever platform but when we watch it, we are acquiring new words to describe our changing viewing behaviour. We are familiar with binge watching – the weekend you set aside to watch the whole run of a particular series, either because you have missed it somehow or you like it so much you want to see it all again in one hit. Then there is timeshifting – setting a program aside so that you can watch it at a time that is more convenient to you.  And now we have appointment viewing. This is making a time to watch something when it is first shown, usually because you regard it as particularly important. A must-see. You know that everyone else will be watching it as well so, if you want to keep up, you need to reserve a moment in your hectic schedule to come to grips with it.
