meme warfare
This is the spreading of ideas through social media, usually through images and tweets that attack a particular person, organisation, political party, etc., in order to bring about a change in public opinion. It is the digital version of propaganda but designed to suit the online forms of communication as in instagrams and tweets. It also appears as mimetic warfare but meme warfare is neater.
We are becoming aware of just how vulnerable our society is to manipulation in this way. The protection of the electoral process used to be the safeguarding of polling stations and the collection and counting of votes in a way that was regarded as legitimate. Now we have to protect the community from meme warfare so that we don’t discover too late that we have been voting on the basis of fake news delivered by internet trolls.
