truth test
What is truth is something which philosophers have debated for a very long time. The emphasis of this truth test is simpler and more immediate in its consequences. Is a certain person telling the truth or not? It is similar to fact checking but whereas facts are impersonal, telling the truth or not goes to the heart of someone’s character. It is mostly the statements of politicians that we want to truth-test in this post-truth world where you seem to be able to say anything. One American website sports a truthometer which has six readings: true, mostly true, half true, mostly false, false, and “pants on fire” for statements that aren’t just false but also completely ludicrous. No doubt both fact-checking and truth-testing will be much in demand.
