quantum supremacy

 This sounds like the name of a new science fiction movie but is in fact the moment when it is proved that a quantum computer can solve a problem which is effectively beyond the capacity of a classical computer, a moment which we have now reached. The theory is that any problem which can be solved on one kind of computer can be solved on another kind of computer, so the quest was not to find a problem that could be solved only on a quantum computer, but one which could be solved efficiently on a quantum computer but would take a staggeringly long time to solve on a classical computer.

 Google appears to have achieved this although their results are still to be officially published and there is some dispute.  The problem that they solved was not of any consequence but the fact that they did it and demonstrated quantum supremacy is of enormous significance.
